Is quality animal husbandry and dairy production possible in Armenia?
We visited a farm in Dilijan, which we hope will soon become one of a thousand and not be one in a thousand.

Spacious barns, with proper lighting and ventilation for the cattle to move and breathe freely. |
The temperature in the barn can drop to -7 degrees centigrade during winter nights. “The animals are perfectly healthy and have no difficulty adapting to dropping temperatures” assures the in-house veterinarian. |
The preparation and distribution of mixed feed is an automated procedure. |
Fodder (feed), water and rock-salt are available throughout the day. The average production of milk is 3870 liters/year/animal. |
The animals are milked twice a day. The milking is an automated process accompanied by classical music. “The animal is soothed by the music and lets the milk down” says the veterinarian. |
Manure is removed twice a day by an automated chain system and is later used as fertilizer. |
Animals in heat are artificially inseminated by the technician. |
In average each cow gives birth to 1 or 2 calves a year. |
The calves are separated into different age groups. |
Each calve is given a name, documented and tagged. |
The animals are dehorned during the first weeks of the lives. This prevents the animal form hurting itself and others. Also, the veterinarian assures that “…animals with no horns are less aggressive and more obedient”. |
