Khndzorut: Vayots Dzor
History

The village of Khndzorut (formerly Almala) is located in the South-Western part of the Vayotz Dzor Marz. It borders Azerbaijans Autonomous Republic of Nakhijevan, with a common 18-20 kilometer border. The village was built in 1828 by Armenians that immigrated from the Salmast Province of Persia. The village had to move 3 km away from its original location in 1972, in order to be closer to potable water sources.

Economic Assessment

Horticulture and animal husbandry are the main sources of employment within the village.
The community has a milk collection point, which sells goat milk to Gomq Dairy Company.
The relatively large arable lands are insufficiently used because of the lack of irrigation.
Inaccessibility of the main markets is a serious constraint. Barter transactions are a common practice in an intra- and inter-village context..
It has a strong tradition in cultivation of high value crops, tobacco, animal husbandry and apiculture.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
