History

The village of Lusahovit is a relatively new community, even though the existence of the 7th Century Moro Dzor Church in the village speaks to the medieval settlement of the site. Some 100 years ago, a few families from the nearby Khashtarak community settled in this particular area, named then Tsrviz, and only in 1991, was the community incorporated as a village and renamed Lusahovit, abandoning its previous administrative title as a district of Khashtarak.
The village is nestled in a densely forested area, and views from the village open onto the Aghstev River Valley.

Economic Assessment

Lack of proper road access and distance to and from primary markets is a serious obstacle for economic development in Lusahovit.
Given the small size of the farming plots, farmers in the village are not able to use the land most efficiently, primarily because of lack of irrigation capacity. As a result, they primarily grow grains-wheat and barley, which are less burdensome in terms of irrigation infrastructure, but are also lower value crops. In comparison, these village lands could be used to produce fruits, including grapes, if the irrigation infrastructure were sufficient.
There exists very little agricultural machinery in Lusahovit and this has had a negative impact on the village's ability to forge ahead efficiently.
More than a decade of substandard cattle breeding and poor conditions has almost paralyzed the animal husbandry industry of the village, and production of animal products is well below its potential.
Currently, all produced milk and derivative products are for household use in the village. Inter-community barter transactions take place for non-food goods and non-local produce. Irrigation infrastructure will not only provide for increased cow-milk productivity (by 15-20%) but it will also minimize the impact of climate fluctuations on milk production, making the entire process more manageable.
