Nation Building: One Village at a Time

Rural Development
Program
Jujevan: Tavush

History

Jujevan was established in 1874. Four families immigrated from Ayrum and settled within the village. As they were the only immigrants who came here the village grew naturally. There is a new rehabilitated highway that passes through the village. Jujevan is a rather small border village situated on Ijevan-Noyemberian-Bagratashen-Tbilisi interstate highway. At the South East end of the village on the left side of the Ijevan road is the Early Bronze Age Jaghatsategh settlement. On the South side of Jujevan atop a hill on the Ijevan-Noyemberian road is an Early Iron Age cyclopean fort called Poploz-Gash

Infrastructure Assessment

The lands are not irrigated. Thus there is need to construct an accumulating water reservoir of 400-500 m3.
The drinking water supply is not sufficient.
Both cell and land phone connections do not exist therefore it is almost impossible to get connected with outer world.
The community culture center also needs renovation and furnishing.

Economic Assessment

The area of the community is merely 958 ha of which 253 ha are pastures, 170 ha arable lands and 290 ha are forests. Local farmers cultivate mostly cereals. There are 500 heads of cattle of which 250 are milk cows. There are 10-15 households who keep 10-15 cattle. Economic weaknesses are lack of irrigation system and continuing outflow of human resources from the community.
The issue of irrigation should be addressed as priority. There is possibility of a pond construction. Once irrigation is in place it would be possible to produce rich fodder clover, beet, and similar crops. This activity will allow for an increase in milk productivity and livestock breeding.

Revitalization of production of high value perennial crops is another development opportunity. It is necessary to make sound steps towards establishment of new fruit and vegetable processing factories and/or provide marketing and operational assistance to the operating ones.
Having large forests, Jujevan could use those resources wisely in several ways. One option is already identified with the assistance of CARD project which established in the village small processing plant for production of berries preserves.
There is possibility of development of carpet weaving and also training courses for young people in the local school.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
