History

The village of Artchis is located on the east bank of the Debed River, 4 km from the Ayrum station.
The village was established 350 years ago, after the Misgarian brother to whom the lands belonged, gifted the lands to the community.
The villagers have always been involved in farming and planting orchards and since the 1930s the village has been known for its production of dried fruits, and preserves.

Economic Assessment

Development of horticulture and viticulture is possible, considering the climatic conditions, irrigation possibilities as well as available land resources.
Expansion of irrigated lands, establishment of new orchards or vineyards and development of marketing channels for future crops are important possibilities.
The viticulture compared to horticulture is in much better position since Debedevan Procurement Station of Yerevan Champagne Wine Plant regularly buys the grapes grown in Archis remote vineyards located near Deghdzavan.
The fresh fruit grown in the Noyemberian region had been exported to many close and remote regions of the Soviet Union by railway and trucks. In this regard considering that Archis as well as other fruit producing sub-regional communities are located close to the Yerevan-Tbilisi interstate highway and railway, the establishment of fresh fruit cargo terminal with all the necessary infrastructures (warehouses, packaging and packing equipments) may enhance the ability of the region to reach export markets.
The Ayrum Cannery approximately 10 km north of Archis, which was one of the biggest in Soviet Armenia does not operate any longer.
New agricultural machinery will assist in the planting and maintaining of new orchards.
Animal breeding and productivity in the village are well below their potential.
Production of rich fodder alfalfa, clover, sainfoin, silage, beet, and similar crops will not only allow an increase in cow milk productivity by 15-20%, but, more importantly, to minimize the impact of climate fluctuations on milk production, thus to make the whole process more manageable.
Sub regional milk collection centers should be considered for the improvement of dairy production.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
