Achajur: Tavush

History

The village of Achajur is one of the oldest settlements of the region, and being second only to Koghb in population, its establishment at its present location having been recorded since the 16th century. The name Achajur (Eye-waters) comes from the old location of the village, a geographic point at which the people lived where two streams had an eye-shaped confluence. Achajur has always been noted for its population growth; the present village of Haghartsin was founded by people having relocated from Achajur. There are plenty of examples of monasteries, churches, khachkars and other places of historical interest in both the present and old location of the village. The 12th-century monastery of Makaravank is located seven kilometers from the village, at a height near woodland. Noted for its unique architectural style, it is partially in ruins.
A church dating from the mid-18th century can be found in the centre of the village. Constructed by Greek brothers Dmitri and Constantine, it is in great need of repair at present.
The first school at Achajur was founded in the 1880s, and the present secondary school has been functioning since 1937. Over the years, it has had thousands of alumni, of which 26 have turned out to be academicians of the highest degree, professors, PhDs, as well as high officials in the army, two generals, public officials, ministers.
In the past, the village had complete natural gas supply, electricity and paved roads; sports were a major pastime. As a result of wartime activities, the infrastructure, as well as the functioning of social and residential structures, has deteriorated.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
