Nation Building: One Village at a Time

Yegvard: Syunik

History

St. Orbelyan refers to Yeghvard as Aghahord and mentions that the village was in Syuniks Kashoinik province.

From the 7th to 16th centuries Yeghvard was destroyed and rebuilt many times by the Arab, then the Mongol, and finally Turkish conquerors. In 1725, on the Shoushanner field about 9 km West of the village, a battle took place between David Beks military force under the command of Prince Toros and Fatal Khans army. Prince Toros was killed and is buried in Yeghvard.

The village was destroyed by the command of Irans Shah in 1729-1730 for being an offensive village, the villagers were deported to Persia, in the Vina village of Karabagh. One century later, under the 1828 Turkmen decree 54 families returned to their home-village in 1830.

In the Yeghvard region are Shinategh and Khachi Khoout residential areas. There are also 10-19th century cemeteries, with many epitaph khachkhars. The St. Astvatzatzin church located in the center of the village was built in 1700 and is still in good condition. Near the village is also the church called Spitak Aghbyouri khach.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
