Rural Development
Program
Khnatsakh: Syunik

History

The Village was formerly called Khanatsakh or Khonatsakh and was part of the of Syuniks rural region of Haband. There are many legends on the villages name. According to one legend, the land belonged to a Khan, who sold it (tsakh), therefore the name Khanatsakh. According to another legend, the Khan was attacked. During the attack, the Khan said I will not give you even one zagh (plant), thus the name Khanazagh. A third legend says that originally it was called Khonatsakh (vendors of incense), which comes from the words Khunk (incense) and tsakh (sale).
Like other villages in Goris, caves are found in Khnatsakh. In the village there is a Church built in the 1610, another church built in a rock bed, and two chapels. Not far from the village, in the place called Khachin or Tsitskar, there are the 7th 10th century village sites of Myulkon, Platcha, Jalal Hasani and old cemeteries.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
