Geghanush: Syunik

History

Previously Geghanush was part of Yelizavetapol state in the Zangezour province. It has been renamed Geghanush under the June 29, 1949 decree of the ASSR Supreme Soviet. Its former name was Kyoutkoum. In 1993 Geghnush and Gomaran villages were mergedto have one collective farm. In 1991 the collective farm was abolished. In the surroundings of Geghanush are the ruins of the old residence areas of Srhak, Khngyou and Ghazangyol, a tomb from 1st c. B.C., a 10-17th century cemetery. There are two churches in the village. One was built during the 15 and 16th centuries, the other (St. Hripsime) was built in 1800. St. Hripsime has been renovated and is currently functioning. The Geghanush administrative region includes the residencies of Geghanush and Gomaran. Natural resources of the community are marble and marble-limestone, limestone mines.
