Nation Building: One Village at a Time

Rural Development
Program
Chapni: Syunik

History

Enkenants residence is under the community administration of Chapni. 1.5 km north of the village is the Hin Chapni residence, which is currently administered by the Davitbek community. It is not clear when Chapni was created. In Enkenants and Chapni villages churches were built between 1906 and 1912. In 1982 an oil production center was opened. According to the dates of these historical monuments one can assume that the village was formed at the 2nd half of the 19th century. Until 1939 Chapni and Enkenants were separate villages, each with its own collective farm. In 1940 the population of Hin Chapni moved to Erkenants village, and in 1951 the collective farms were united, and a separate village council was created. In 1959 the village council was abolished, and its collective farm was merged with the collective farm of Davitbek. In 1985 it separated from Davitbek and united with the economic council of Sevakar, and Chapni was included in Sevakars village council. In 1991 Chapni was separated and its autonomous administrative council was created: the Chapni village council. Chapnis community was formed in 1996, as a result of Republic of Armenias new regional administrative divisions.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
