Sizavet: Shirak
History

Until 1947 known as Aralgh Akhurian and Gharakhanchay, this village was fully moved from its original location in 1984 after the construction of the Akhurian reservoir. The remains of a 4th century church were moved to the new location from its original place, which was sunk under the reservoir.
The inhabitants of Yerazgavors are descendants of migrants from Artonk near Mush.

Economic Assessment

The population is mostly engaged in farming, with annual output of around 80 tons of wheat, 38 tons of vegetables, 470 tons of grass. There are no production facilities or shops. The produce is sold at the Gyumri markets. The demand of fertilizers and seeds is only partially satisfied. There are 16 tractors of different kinds, 2 harvesting combines, 12 trucks, and ploughs.
Small land plots are a major impediment for the development of Yerazgavors. Some of those plots are located in the frontier zone meaning that the farmers must pass special passport control to get there. In the 1980s when the negative economic impact of the construction of the Akhurian Reservoir on local agriculture became obvious, a decision was taken to set up several small industrial enterprises in the region (e.g. a shoe factory), to complement the downsized agricultural production. However, none of these are operational today.
The current irrigation mode, pumping water from the reservoir, is too expensive. If the gravity irrigation pipeline and internal irrigation network are built within the framework of the Millennium Challenge Account, 200 hectares of arable lands will be irrigated. The community has around 340 heads of cattle and 1150 domesticated birds, 280 beehives. There are 9 hectares of pasture and 239 hectares of arable land, or which 90 are irrigated. Increase of animal husbandry is potentially profitable.
Tourism could become another economic development opportunity for Yerazgavors. The Akhurian Reservoir offers breathtaking scenery of a beautiful landscape and ancient Armenian monuments, which include the ruins of a fortress reportedly dating back to the 10th century.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
