PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Infrastructure Assessment

Small slots of arable land and high cost of the irrigation hamper the efficiency of the production. Most of the community cannot afford the cost of the pump water supply from the Debed River and relies mainly on the natural precipitation. However, Shen foundation used a DFID grant, start 25 hectares of peach orchards in Ayrum. Shen also covers property taxes and irrigation payments for 30 farmers until their peach orchards starts to give fruit. Another Shen project supported by the Land and Culture foundation (USA) is to build two sun-drying facilities, to produce both dried fruit and vegetables.
The machinery is obsolete and not sufficient for the expansion of the orchards.
The animal husbandry is below its potential because of the poor breeding and bad-quality fodder
Remoteness from the main agricultural markets is a serious constraint for the development of the community.
Lack of food processing facilities in the region seriously hampers the expansion of orchards and increase of the volume of the production.

Economic Assessment

The climate, the irrigation system and the available land resources are favorable for the intensive development of farming and animal husbandry.
Expansion of irrigated lands, planting of new orchards/vineyards and access to the markets are essential and clearly, Ayrum farmers need support in all the above.
In the past, the region used to export the fruit to other pars of the Soviet Union. Ayrum and the other fruit producing sub-regional communities have short access to the Yerevan-Tbilisi interstate highway and railway, which would facilitate a possible construction of a fresh fruit cargo terminal complete with the necessary infrastructures (warehouses, packaging and packaging equipments, etc). Such a facility could substantially boost the expansion of fruit production in the area.
Another option is establishment or resumption of processing companies in the sub-region. Ayrum processing factory, which was one of the largest of its kind in Armenia, is only 15 km north from Ayrum. Regretfully it is now mostly non-operational.
The agricultural machinery of the community is not sufficient for the expansion of the orchards. The new special machinery for horticulture and viticulture will allow to the local agricultural potential; it could also promote the production of rich fodder and eventually increase the milk production.
Improvements of local breeds are necessary to promote animal husbandry. Besides, all produced milk is utilized in-home is used for cheese processing. Barter exchange for consumer goods is a common. Although Ayrum has seen a serious decrease of the cattle (the community now has only 216 cows) it has a potential to grow with the increase of production and better marketing. Ultimately the above mentioned activities will allow transferring the animal husbandry from subsistent into a sustainable domain.
The marketing can be addressed through the establishment of a milk collection point in one of the nearby communities, and deliver the milk to dairy factories in Yerevan or other nearby regions.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
