School
Current situation: The school was built in 1962. The two story structure occupies around 3600 m2. The school is a T shaped structure that consists of three buildings and has a basement. The central building includes cafeteria, event hall, utility rooms a gym and the total area is 1235 m2. The other two buildings of the school occupy around 800 m2 each and were planned as classroom space.

Primary renovations: The whole structure is in unsatisfactory condition. The roof, the walls and the floors of the school all need to be repaired along with replacing the windows, doors, the electric wiring and installation of a heating system. The school premises need to be improved, along with the modification and modernization of the exterior. The school also needs new sanitary units.

Area to be repaired: It is not viable to reconstruct the whole area of the school but instead focus on rebuilding around 1500 m2, which would meet all the requirements of an educational process.

Road

The community’s access road that links the village to the main road is 2.8 km and is in need of repair. 3 km of the intra communal roads are in unsatisfactory condition as well.

Health Care Point

The health care point is located in the first floor of the two story building which was built in 1962. The second floor is the administration office area. The building needs repair.

Community Administration

Current situation : The community administration building was built in 1962 and is located in one story building (13 x16 m). The first Artsni community administration floor of the building is occupied by a health point, a store and an event hall. The second floor is the administration office area. The building needs repair.

Primary renovations : The restoration would require a number of key components. The roof and the floors of the building have to be replaced. The floor and the walls of the first story need water isolation. All the windows and doors need to be replaced along with repairing all the ceilings and walls. The restoration will include the installation of new sanitary units and some alteration of the first floor planning to include spaces for the event hall and community library.

The heating will be done with natural gas, using small scale heating utilities. The external walls of the building need to be strengthened.

Area to be repaired : The reconstruction will include 300 m 2 of the community administration premises.

Drinking Water

Background Information: The community is supplied with drinking water from a spring inside the village. The water from the spring then enters a pipeline (diameter=100mm) and is carried by gravity flow to supply the lower parts of the village. The community members gather water via faucets, which are basically holes opened in the pipe.

The water flows from the spring at the capacity of 1 liter per second. The spring has a closed capitation and about 70m from the captation there is a small water reservoir. It is in a relatively good condition and needs only superficial repair and guaranteeing that all the adequate sanitary norms are kept. In the past, there was a pumping station next to the reservoir. It supplied water to the upper neighborhoods of the community. Currently, the village has no internal water supply network.

Solution: During preliminary research, The Armenia Fund experts found out that there are a number of usable springs around 800 m from the village. The combined capacity of the springs is 2 liters per second. To improve and modernize the water supply network three more captations need to be installed on the springs outside the village. The water supply improvement initiative will also require the building of a 100m 3 water reservoir; addition of water disinfection and sanitary norms control station; creation of a sanitary belt around all the water carrying structures; installation of a 2km pipeline (diameter=70-100mm) from the captations to the distribution hub; establishment of internal water supply network with 70-25 diameter pipes. The project will also include the rebuilding of the existing water reservoir.

Natural Gas

The gasification of the village would require building around 2.5 km pipeline, which would link the village to the main pipeline and there is a need of internal gas network.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
