Nation Building: One Village at a Time

Rural Development
Program
Jil: Gegharkunik
History

Jil, situated on the narrow shore strip between Lake Sevan and Sevan Range on the eastern shore of the lake, was established in the 12th Century.
Until 1988 Jil was an Azeri populated village, which after the departure of the Azeri residents was resettled by Armenian war refugees from various regions of Azerbaijan.

Despite its location near the Sevan-Vardenis higway, Jils access and surface road connection to surrounding villages is very weak and insufficient.

Economic Assessment

The community has about 5,244 hectares total area, 1302 hectares of which are pastures, 582 hectares are arable lands, 44 hectares are grasslands. There are 1210 livestock, 16 beehives, and 380 poultry.
Jil's agricultural land resources are quite considerable both for horticulture and animal husbandry development. The community's economic strengths derive from large arable lands, pastures and grasslands and available land at the lake shore. Economic weaknesses are, vulnerability of local agriculture (due to severe climate), obsolete equipment, and lack of irrigation.
Once irrigation is in place it would be possible to produce rich fodder - clover, beet, and similar crops. This activity will allow not only to increase milk productivity but also livestock breeding.
A minimum set of new agricultural machinery such as crop harvester, cultivator, mowing machine, and other relevant machinery will provide for more efficiency in horticultural activities in Jil.
Jil has a narrow strip of shoreline at Lake Sevan. Startup of tourism sector activities may positively impact economic development.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
