Zangakatun: Ararat

History
Zangakatun village is located in the Ararat region 105 km to South-East from capital. It is bordering Nakhichevan (20 km of border).
Though Ararat Region mostly occupies Ararat Valley, Zangakatun, along with 7 other communities, is located in mountainous sub-region (1650-1700 m of the sea level) of Ararat Marz. This location offers specific economic development opportunities such as production of late ripening apricot, offering high yield of apples, and allowing agricultural activities virtually in all sub-sectors of agriculture.

Economic Assessment
Zangakatun community is traditionally famous around the country for its high quality apples. Due to favorable local climate the yield of this crop in Zangakatun is relatively high therefore local farmers sell apples most of time of the year. It is possible to increase production of fruits and vegs using new lands via expanded and enhanced irrigation system and new agricultural machinery. The community has excessive amount of water supply from Hortum Water Reservoir but does not have proper internal irrigation network to take advantage of this opportunity. Thus the community needs 15 km of internal irrigation line and 5 km of external line to be built to irrigate 400 ha of land.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
