Nation Building: One Village at a Time

Rural Development
Program
Suser: Aragatsotn
History

The village (formerly Ghiliyatagh) was established in 1920. Some of the population are descendants of settlers from Mush. The village is 18 km from the larger city of Talin, also home to Mshetsis and Sasuntsis. The statue of General Andranik stands in the center of the village, together with monuments to those who died in World War II, as well as a khachkar to the memory of earthquake victims. The nearby Bowl Valley, and its caves, has touristic value. Mount Abro and Mount Top line the village on two sides.

Economic Assessment

Most of the village lands are arable, but they are inefficiently utilized, largely due to the lack of irrigation. As a result, they focus on grains, rather than higher-priced fruit or vegetables. An absence of rich feed results in low-quality milk production. An important missing link is a distribution purchasing network. A meat processing plant in the region would be of great economic value to some 20 nearby villages, especially since sheepherding is an important activity and the geography and climate are right for that activity.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
