PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Infrastructure Assessment

This community's obsolete irrigation system is a hindrance to the development of effective farming resources and makes it vulnerable to harsh climatic conditions such as draught and hail. This is the main reason why the community depends largely on the production of low-income generating cereals instead of cultivating fruits and vegetables and rich fodder crops.

Economic Assessment

Nor Artik has sizeable land resources, which may be used for the development of horticulture and animal husbandry activities.
In horticulture, the community should target a transition to high-value crops such as fruits and vegetables, as well as increased production of cereals and rich fodder crops. In particular, Nor Artik owns 50 hectares of fertile lands that were once used to cultivate grape and various fruits (a 2 km irrigation pipeline is necessary rehabilitate these plots).
The increased production of fruits and vegetables from this community may be sold to food processing companies in the region, as well as to fresh-fruit wholesalers.
Currently, the village owns 520 cattle heads of which 340 are milk cows producing only about 1 500 liters of milk per annum. This community also can target intensive sheep-keeping activity (currently the community owns more than 1,500 sheep) thus increasing its overall production of lamb meat, sheep milk and wool. This can lead to higher-income generating cheeses from sheeps milk.

This is the regular train that serves the needs of the people of Armenia's Shirak region. It has not been replaced for more than forty years and still bears the (now rusty)symbols of the Soviet Empire. Convenience and comfort are two things one will not find here.
