The newly-built school in Ashotsk
The start of the 2014-2015 academic year in Ashotsk, a town in northern Armenia’s Shirak Region, will be unlike any other in recent memory, as the community’s 262 schoolchildren, 28 of whom are first-graders, will attend a brand new school, built with the sponsorship of French-Armenian benefactors Arakel and Lydie Gazarian as well as Dirouhie Gazarian Manoukian.

The campus is the largest ever built in Armenia by the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund. Comprising four buildings with a total area of 2,700 square meters, it is a state-of-the-art facility that can accommodate up to 360 students and features bright and spacious classrooms, various laboratories, a computer room, a sizeable multifunctional events hall, a gym, and a cafeteria. Amenities include central heating and air conditioning, and the school has been fully furnished within the framework of the project.

Ashotsk’s old school, built during the Soviet era, had fallen into disrepair in the past two decades, while the town lacked the necessary funds to construct a new campus — until, that is, the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund addressed the issue with support from its French-Armenian benefactors. Former principal Hmayak Khachatryan recalls that one of the old school’s most serious problems was a broken heating system, which often made it impossible to hold classes during Shirak’s severe winters.

The new Ashotsk school is the latest in a long string of educational and education-infrastructure projects in Armenia and Artsakh sponsored by the French-Armenian community during the past 20 years.
