Hayastan All-Armenian Fund Toronto affiliate renovates Yerevan’s Nork Nursing Home
Project is part of larger modernization planIn February 2012 the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund completed extensive renovations of Yerevan’s Nork Nursing Home. The initiative comprised a complete refurbishment of the third and fourth floors of one of the facility’s two buildings, including the reconstruction of the staircase, replacement of floors, doors, and windows, and upgrades of the water, electrical, and plumbing systems. The project was sponsored by the fund’s Toronto affiliate.
Built in 1989-1990, the Nork Nursing Home has undergone renovations since 2010, as part of a general modernization plan implemented by the fund. Currently the retirement facility accommodates 230 seniors, including 130 women, who live in individual studio apartments. Arthur Melkonyan, who heads the nursing home, said that recently one of the updated apartments was given to a newly wed senior couple.
Residents of the Nork Nursing Home can enjoy a slew of cultural events and are provided with various health benefits. On March 10, 2012, some 60 residents attended a book signing for Women Don’t get old, penned by Karine Mkrtchyan. Held at the Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall, the event concluded with a musical presentation. In February this year the nursing home provided 78 residents with free eye examinations at the H. Malayan Eye Center. As a result, 49 seniors will soon receive prescription glasses.
Today the Nork Nursing Home is a far more comfortable and pleasant facility compared with the past, thanks to not only its refurbished apartments, but an upgraded cafeteria and an entertainment hall, which were recently renovated through the efforts of the management. download Western Armenian version
